How To Be Your Own Bodyguard

How To Be Your Own Bodyguard

Just because you are not rich and famous does not mean that you will not run across threats of your own to deal with. Since you are probably not of the financial means to hire a full time security staff of bodyguards, you may want to do the next best thing. By learning a few basic self defense techniques, you won't need to pay someone thousands of dollars to watch your back. You can be your own bodyguard and be all the better for it.

In any given dangerous situation, you have several options to protect yourself. If there were an actual bodyguard with you, the first thing they would do is to get you away from the danger. For that reason, sometimes simply running away is the best option when trying to defend yourself. It does depend on the situation, however, and isn't always the best option. If you are backed into a corner, obviously running is not the most prevalent option. If you do choose this route, you will have to be in good enough shape to keep running until you've gotten way from whoever is trying to harm you, or to a safer place. It probably looks a lot easier to get away in the movies when the star is shielded by a wall of gun wielding bodyguards.

The basic functions of a bodyguard are to protect the client against danger and to constantly be on the lookout for it. Prevention is the most useful tool a bodyguard has, and by avoiding unsafe people or situations, they can keep from needing to physically defend their clients. To protect yourself in this way, try to avoid threatening areas. If you can't help where you go, try not to go alone. You may not be able to bring a bodyguard, but sometimes a friend can work just as well. Additionally, avoid actions that bring on the attention of potential predators. In other words, don't walk away from an ATM outside downtown at midnight counting your money. You could be asking to be attacked.

Sometimes avoiding the danger is simply not an option, and you have to defend yourself. A professional bodyguard will try to quickly and efficiently neutralize the situation. Simply put, immobilize your attacker until you can get away or call for help. If you are in serious physical danger, this may not be the best time to try out the moves you saw on the last Jackie Chan movie. Instead, think about quick and easy motions that will strike your attacker in the most painful and immobilizing spots. This is where knowing how to be your own bodyguard really comes in handy.

There are several ways to immobilize an attacker, and a good bodyguard will know most of them. The eyes are very sensitive and a quick poke to either or both can stop your attacker in his tracks. The chins are also painful if kicked, and can provide a good distraction long enough for you to make your exit. If your attacker is male, it is pretty common knowledge what the most sensitive point of impact is, and if your life is being threatened, don't dare hesitate. You may not be build like a bodyguard, and you may not be as strong or well trained as one, but that doesn't mean that you can't use the same techniques to protect your most important client-you.
